PAUL F. TOMPKINS IS ONLINE
Meet the person who just made me decide never to put my comedy on Spotify.
**UPDATE!**
This guy was just kidding! If you were going to call him a jerk, please don’t. If you already have, please apologize. I have. People have been saying all sorts of nasty things to him. That was not my intent. I should have thought about it a little further, maybe, and let it go.
Here’s the thing: there are many people who say stuff like this and they are SERIOUS. It happens a lot, and not just to me. It’s that magical intersection of entitlement and anonymity-fueled “courage” that makes sincere versions of the tweet on display above a dumb reality.
Here’s another thing: when making a joke, it’s not always enough to know your audience; sometimes you need to be sure that your audience knows you. Sarcasm from a stranger can be difficult to read, especially when you’re literally reading it, and also see my first “here’s the thing.”
So please leave this young man alone. And remember: jokes have jokesequences!
